Bringing back nature to a slice of Wales
Llanlawrence is a 150-acre rewilding project in the heart of Monmouthshire, where natural processes have led the way since 2022.
Our Vision
A wilder land, shaped by nature
Once an area used for sheep grazing, Llanlawrence has potential to become a mosaic of ancient woodland, species-rich grassland, wildflower meadows and ponds.
Conservation Grazing
We're using native cattle to replicate wild herbivores, creating a wood pasture mosaic that allows insects, birds and mammals to thrive.
Ancient Woodland
Pockets of ancient woodland will be given the chance to regenerate and reconnect, storing more carbon and strengthening corridors for wildlife.
Wildflower Meadows
20 acres are being dedicated to creating wildflower hay meadows, using wildflower seeds from Gwent Wildlife Trust Pentwyn Farm.
Waterways
We are rewetting the land by blocking drains and slowing the flow of streams by building leaky dams.
The Herd
Meet the Belted Galloways
Our herd of 12 Belted Galloways are the engine of the rewilding project. These hardy, traditional cattle are perfectly suited to conservation grazing, staying out on the land year-round. They maintain vital grassland habitat and create diversity through non-selective grazing, nutrient cycling and soil disturbance.
They also offer the opportunity to produce pasture-fed rewilded meat that supports nature restoration.
Wildlife
A home for wild things
The land is home to birds of prey including red kites and barn owls. We've seen dippers and kingfishers along the streams and there is a resident nesting pair of ravens.
We frequently see wild red deer on the edges of the woodland, badgers and foxes, and have even seen water voles and wild boar.
